CLANNAD downs Kanon with a solid one-two combo. Seriously, CLANNAD’s already shown itself to be much better (Not to say Kanon is bad - just the opposite, but CLANNAD is even better), both in pacing, humour, drama and characters. Tomoya is so much better than Yuuichi - he’s a harem lead who is genuinely nice, has his own personality, has his own tragic past and actually plays a starring role rather than simply being the guy to help/get the girls. Plus the heroines are quite awesome - Nagisa is better than Ayu; Tomoyo and Kyou are hilariously fantastic (to excess, even - as Kurogane points out, Tomoyo is even more powerful than in the game); Fuuko seems funny but we haven’t seen much of Kotomi.
The fact that the story seems to revolve around Tomoya is excellent in my opinion - he’s a superb character who possesses a distinct personality which separates him from almost every harem lead ever created (outside of TYPE-MOON works). It seems that rather than Tomoya helping Nagisa, they’re both going to help each other in different ways. The fact that Tomoya’s tragic past and problems are realistic and not fantasy are simply icing on the cake. Yes, in case you hadn’t noticed I’ve become a fan of Tomoya. I’m rather glad that they didn’t get Sugita to voice him - I don’t think he could have pulled off this character type (lack of sarcasm and the fact that Tomoya has a very different personality than what Sugita usually plays - plus we’ve heard him enough). The drama involving Tomoya is excellent - I love the scenes involving his father and the basketball bit at the end. Again, the fact that these aren’t fantasy situation makes it more effective.
Current Favourite Girl: Tomoyo. She’s injecting so much humour and awesomeness into this anime it’s ridiculous. Plus, anyone capable of pulling off a 528-hit combo gets my vote. I was going to go for Kyou because of her scene, but then realised the hilarity ensued from Tomoya rather than Kyou. Nagisa was dropped due to her lack of eccentricity - she’s cute and all, but nowhere near as good as the rest of the cast. Tomoyo will likely retain this position for some time, unless somebody can top her performance this episode or she screws up in later episodes.
